Hazel says this is George Bell.
These final 8 pictures appear to be from the same unidentified show.

Note that George Bell is obviously Eqes. Dir. I always thought that Fred Leonard was Eqis. Dir. in 38.

The first picture is the only one from Seils-Sterling.
Might this picture of Mr. Bell be from Mills Bros.?

Topic of Debate for this week...what are the official duties of the Equestrian Director and the official duties of the guy who announces the show.
This topic is limited to American-style only. Personal jabs will not be tolerated by the management.

Anonymous,
You need to stay 3 car lengths back. I made you when I pulled into the Starbuck's. Bill's stuff doesn't evaporate before your eyes.
Wade Burck

P.S. The only difference I have noticed is the Equestrian Director wears tall black boots, and a red jacket, and the guy who announces the show wears a red jacket, and tall black boots.

Once again we get in cloudy skies. It all depends. With that the subject of Ringmaster comes up and along with Perf. Dir. it even more muddy's the water more. There is nothing definitive since the days of Bradna, Valdo and various announcers. We look to Cole Bros. where Harry Thomas was announcer, but Harry McFarlin was Eqes. Dir. however Paul Nelson was Titled as "Director of performing personnel and for that period of time nelson superceeded all the others in authority. Clyde Beatty always harked back to the AMC with authority to his Eqes. Director, Be it Jack Joyce, Jorgen Cristiansen and finally Johnny Cline. The announcers, with no authority whatsoever would be Norman Carrol, Charlie Cox, Dave Murphy, among others. Ringling in the modern era has no position for Eques. Dir. and am proud to say that Kenneth Feld gave me that title during the Japanese tour and is listed in the program as such. Dinny is Ring. Mas., Peggy is Perf. Dir., Charly Baumann is exec. Perf. Dir. and we all had a job to do, so you could say I was the last of Official Equestrian Directors with the empire of the GSOE. I am proud.

As the Equestrian Director for the "Big Circus Sideshow"...I wear a Fedora, Walmart Black slacks, Bass wing-tips, a button up shirt with a Bow-tie...Unless Circus Royalty shows up...Then I swap the Fedora for a Boater and a Red Blazer....Even tho I am the only Equestrian Director the BCS has ever had...I take the job seriously like all the Old-time Greats......Sincerly Jim Zajicek (Fellow Horseman)

Johnny: I know what Mr. Maguire did, and I suppose a performance director was needed to hold the exec. performance directors whistle and stop watch....
If you have the backing for that staff load (they like being called staff, it makes old performers better then performers. What was the equestrian directors task. Wade Burck has been told to go back Ringling if he liked it so much.... Are you going back with him and will you guys fight over what is left of the horses? Paul

Zajicek,
I just got a fax from The Spanish Riding School, in Vienna and they wanted the credentials of "Fellow Horseman" Jim Zajicek. I told them he sells a "peek" for 2.00 a copy to a miniature horse, he winters in Horse Capitol, Ocala Fla.,
has a red coat and wingtips, entertains royalty like that charletan Monty Roberts, was schooled in the Equestrian Arts by Ward Hall and Dicky Garden, and his style has never really classified.
They said you could "claim" a style that has only been used once, for Capt. Blackys groom the day of the photo shoot, when the horse cold cocked him, and took out 7 teeth. Proclaimed from this day forth--- "Under Col.(way under) James Zajicek, Purveyor/Instructor of the "Gomer Pyle" Style." High riding crop fives, I'm proud of you, Pal.
Your friend,
Wade Burck

Under Col Zajicek.,
"Recognized by my peers?" I am not familiar with that term. Is it a new horsey set term, or did it originate in the carnival business? I would hope you at least bought Dicky Kolreiser a chicken fried steak and cherry cobbler. You are fortunate that kind of power came to a local association meeting.

John Milton,
I need to give Paul Kaye and the Hadi Temple an answer. I have asked for a lot of money, for the Equestrian Director position I suggested they needed, and they want to know what they can expect for that kind of scratch. What are his duties has been asked a couple of time's. Help out here, please.

To Paul Kaye, Nice to hear from you on the blog and you certainly personify all of the various titles having worn all those hats [so to speak] at the same time during your illusrrios career. I recall when I filled in for you in Cleveland when you had to go to Milwaukee and assumed that role, plus, and I was not aware of it you also held the head set and called the light cues, which I learned to do under fire while doing this job. Most especially you had the authority to do the job in all its phases, so what title would you have given youself in those days? Those were some pretty big highly professional shows.
Now as to going back. I don't think so. I have a little motto and it goes like this, "Its the Greatest Show On Earth to be from".

Hey Paul,
What is the meaning of this fax I just intercepted?
"Herriott, if you think running lights and sound is a hard, tiring deal, you need to do that, plus share a dressing room with that prima donna Wade Burck, on a 6 pack week end. That will test your stamina to the limits, believe me."
I may be wrong, but I think Johnny was complimenting you skills Paul, not asking what could be harder. You guy's need to quit misinterpreting the posts.
Well you won't need to worry about your stamina being tested anymore, Paul. If it's true you are doing Cleveland and Evansville, I'm not up to that long of a season.
