To Pat White

SAVE2853, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

This is the first picture I sent out over the Internet in 2003, my first year of retirement. It shows "Tena", "Anna May" and "Barbara" in 1950.
It all began innocently enough, I was at my typewriter one day when Shannon came in carrying this machine saying that his mother had bought a new computer and was told to set this one up in my room.
I forgot all about it until a month or so later when I noticed grandson Pat playing a game on the thing and I asked, "How do you do that?" so he showed me how to set up Solitare and stuff like that and then later how to communicate via eMail.
Eventually Shannon explained that with all the pictures, programs and route books I had laying around, why not send a few things out to friends. He showed me the scanner, what it did and even sent out the first few items for me and before long I began receiving eMail address from people I didn't even know.
By 1994 I had a list of around 200 people but I had to click each one individually just to send one picture, three pictures was a workout. My wife said I was like a little boy showing off his toys.
Finally one day AOL shut me down with no explanation. Shannon thought it was because the volume was growing so fast they probably thought it was some sort of commercial operation.
So by 2005 he created this Blog which now, is indeed a commercial operation, the more the accompanying ads are clicked on, the larger the stipend. Currently I receive about $15 a week but no cook house.
And when I say $15, I don't mean $14.95 and I don't mean $15.05.
I mean $15.

That was probably less than you wanted but more than they offered.

Thanks so much Buckles! I've been curious for some time. As much time as I spend on this computer, I'd be delighted if somebody sent me $15 a week!

Thanks for the lifeline back into the real world. I've made several interesting connections with people through your blog!

At first I was fascinated when I discovered that everyone in the world has an eMail address. As soon as a new one popped up I included them on the list.
One day I was talking with Gary Jacobson and he added, "By the way, Kenny says to thank you for the picture (it was of the 50-plus elephants the show carried in 1955)."
Gary then added, "He thinks you have gone nuts with that thing".

15 a week, no cook house. You should be getting a grant from a historical society, or something. You own a blog, that is similar to a Smithsonian library of circus history. Thank you.

It's amazing how many of us in the AARP generation have come to rely on e-mail. I had to depend on my daughter, then in 2nd grade, to explain the machine to me. Now I can almost confidently get around the computer if I don't get too tricky. At least I can find the Blog.

Some of the ads are interesting. Only this morning I could find help locating a Jewish girlfriend and found out about a Hispanic TV show -- what's next?

Buckles,
Merry Christmas! (a day late)
Anna May has obviously been an important part of your life. How did she join "your family?" Also, did you make a mistake on the date 1973?

In 1951, D.R. Miller imported three baby elephants for my father to train and a partnership was formed to operate an independent act.
After their arrival in Central Park Zoo my father flew to NY to check them out only to find that one had a crippled hind leg.
He returned with the other two (Fanny and Lydia) but by this time the season was almost over and the act was already booked for 1952 with Siebrand Bros. Carnival.
So he borrowed "Anna May" but somehow forgot to send her back.

Thanks for the great blog - I hope you can put a day aside for Anna May... she was a great elephant and I always felt she died of a broken heart over anything else even at her age. her heart always seemed to be in performing, some you can tell they are not really put their heart into it, but not Anna May. I know I would drop dead if I had to quit.

$15.00 is about 5 gallons in the tank where I live. That wouldn't get me very far down the road!
Thanks for all you do to keep showfolks around the globe connected to each other and our beloved business.

I get more out of your blog in a week's time than I do from a year's membership in CFA, which goes to prove that the best things in life ARE free! (Thank goodness you don't have the same mind set as those who charge $15 for their candy floss. Otherwise, you might start charging us a subscription fee in order to access your blog every day.)

Buckles,
If you charged each of us a $1 a day, you could really retire, but then there would be no blog. On second thought, maybe I could get first count. Then I could retire also.

This blog must surely be the biggest repository of cicus picture on the web. There's been many a night I've been up til 1 in the morning looking at 'back issues'. I think you might have single handely put a crimp in TV ratings

Thank you so much Buckles, your web blog is great, photos articles stories of old but for all of us you have shared the comments and introduced us to WADE BURCKE. The life and soul of the comments, the man who will never be known as anonomous, Merry Christmas, and a Happy New year, from us in Europe

Buckles said...

Thank you for your kind words,
I forgot to mention that Mr. Burck was at the Showfolks Club in Sarasota last Saturday.
We had made previous arrangements and couldn't attend. I was told that it was his first visit there and of course he took the place by storm.
You might be interested in knowing that his next stop is Europe and due to his new found status there, you might want to keep a close lookout for him.

The History Channel really needs to do a few shows about the info on your blog! It might stick a dagger in the AR folks for sure!

Wade in Europe? I heard he was "punchin cows" in Quebec. Just great, I wonder if he will acquire a Ger-Pol-Euro accent? Wade don't forget your American Hillbilly friends, now that you are an international sensation.

Buckles,
I had one of the best times of my life, at show folk's last week. Yes, it was my first time, and who better to bust my cherry, then the great Col. Herriott. We trained more horse's in 2 hour's then most train in 2 year's. Sure missed your valuable insight.

Ill try to make this brief, as the keyboards are different here, and I am a bit of a computer spastic.

Anonymous Europe,
No E, just Burck. Once in my life, 3 years ago, I had somebody puff up their chest, and say, "Do you know who I am!!!!" My response, "Hell no. Everybody here seems to be named Anonymous!!!" Oddly, the individual asking has written the book on Cute and Charming.
Wade Burck

Casey,
Cant you keep your mouth shut!!! I try to help you feed your tigers until you go on the road again, and you alert the border guards!!!! Now we have to cross at the other place (no, we are not going to tell you) and it will delay us by a week. Rowdy Yates, head em up, move em out, before Casey alerts anybody else.

Ken Burns needs to do one of his documentaries on the Circus. Ken does a terrific job using live interviews. For example, check out all of the live interviews he used in his recent World War II documentary. He also did a great story on the history of Coney Island. Buckles should be the first person that he interviews if he does a Circus series.
