Sparks Circus 1920's #9

Scan000010450, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

No date on this group photo but I figure about twice the number of people as seen on a Ken & Nicole show today.
I don't see Mr. Sparks in the picture but I count 17 musicians in his band.
Two tubas, I'll bet they beat out "Gentry's Triumphal" with assiduity. Maybe even "The Storming of El Caney".

Looks like everone is getting ready for Mr.Kelty to take one of his 12 X 20 photos with both the sideshow and big top bands on top of the bandwagons. Looks like they are all dressed for the opening spec.

I think that the tubas are actually Sousaphones.

Curiosity question. Is this a photo of the whole show personnel? It seems that there are a large number of women and few men.Bill Galloway

A good question.
That looks like Walter McLain at the extreme right in the third row.

Kelty would visit a show for a day and take photos of different depts on the show. This looks like just the people involved with the opening spec. Notice no ushers, cookhouse crew,or teamsters. These depts would have their own seperate photos taken. On a larger show he would visit a couple of times during the year to take all the different groups.

Thank you Mr. Holmes. I thought that the picture was for a specific group on the show and you confirmed it. Bill Galloway

With that thought in mind, they must have had three times the people as Ken & Nicole.
