From Richard Reynolds

rino001, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Great photo for the rhinocerologists.

I think this animal has been performing with the German Circus Barum for 20 years. This show has always been very strong in the animal department - -giraffe, hippo, zebras (large group) and wonderful caged animal acts including one with Persian leopards.

"I meant to send this picture out several days ago, tho Mr. Reynolds material is probably the most detailed and interesting, his pictures are the most difficult for me to enter.
If a picture comes with a paper clip, no problem and if not, Shannon has given me a formula but for Richard's, only an envelope appears when I try to enter it and I have to wait until Shannon is available." Buckles

Richard,
Since I can only see the left half of the text, I never know the whole story.
Is this from Barum? If so is this Sandro? He did High School on Krone when we were there, we visited him on Barum later where he was working a large mixed group.

I not know the name of the trainer/presenter.

Believe the white rhino's name is "Tsavo." Of course that is the name of a large national park in Kenya which is not home to white rhinos.

This animal would have come from Umfolozi or Hluhluwe in Zululand, South AFrica - -or he would have been captive bred and born to animals from there. In Zululand the white rhinos have multiplied in huge numbers - -one of the great conservation success stories.

It has been necessary to thin them out by shipping large numbers of them around the world. That explains how so many have come to be in circuses over the last 40 years.

Though larger than any of the rhino species the whites are the most tractable and easy to manage, making them ideal for appearances in the ring.

Richard,
After asking you the question, I got smart and went into the "foto community", site to find if there was an answer under the original. It is indeed Sandro Montez, I heard the end result of the mixed act was 28 animals, I have also heard since, that he is no longer with Barum.

Yes it's Sandro Montez with Tsavo on tour with Barum. This year, he presents an exotics act, a sea lions act and Corty Althoff elephants with the new Circus Charles KNIE.

Does "Anonymous" of 3 June know the date when Tsavo was born in Burgers zoo.

I think it must have been over 20 years ago.
