Over a half century after this picture was taken, my mother wrote me from Ottumwa saying that she and her sisters Nellie, and Grace planned on making a trip to Des Moines to see the Red Show.
This was my first year at the Park in Orlando and really didn't know that many staff people in the Ringling organization. So I wrote Tim Holst (whom I had never met) and explained the situation adding that I would consider it a personal favor if someone could show them around.
Some time later I phoned to see how things had gone and all three were still giddy explaining that they had been ushered in the back door, escorted down the track and into box seats in front of the center ring. Then during intermission, Gunther stopped by and chatted briefly with the ladies, causing quite a stir among the people seated nearby.
So you see, everybody has a Gunther story.

Saturday, April 3 1971, MSG, Clown College interview, the big old freight elevator that goes backstage, I'm only 14 years old and the sole passenger, then Gunther enters the elevator, almost immediately looks at me and inquires, "Clown College?" and I am barely able to utter, "Yes". He remarks in his thick German accent, "Ve've got too many clowns."
Long ago I was touring the annex building at the St. Louis Arena with my young daughters and one of Gunther's grooms I'd met at the Zoo. Gunther saw us across the building and yelled at us to get out until he saw the groom. For years my girls would say with pride that Gunther himself tried to kick them out of the building. Any recognitions better than none.
Years later when he retired from the ring I met Gunther (Ted S. introduced us). He couldn't have been more pleasant.
