From Mike Naughton

The attached photo appears in a lengthy article on Cal Worthington in today's New York Times automobile section. Thought you'd be interested. Do you have any info on the elephant?

"This is Cliff Vargas elephant "Joe" making a Commercial with Worthington, a popular Los Angeles car dealer. "Joe" is now featured with Circus Krone."

Cal Worthington used to come to the lot & do commercials in front of the big Vargas Concession truck with various animals, referring to them as, "My Dog Spot". Someone asked Cliff how much he got paid for this, and Cliff replied, "are you kidding, do you know how much all that time on TV would cost me to advertise my show, this way I get it free"!

Bill, the Sunday New York Times article on Cal Worthington was very interesting. In it, Cal states that he only made it to the 9th grade and really didn't care for the car business, but it was a great way to make a dollar. I'll bet he and Cliff Vargas got along just fine.
