To Larry Allen Dean

That cannon looking thing on top of the pole wagon is a stake puller "Georgia Buggy".
On the left end of it, a 6' foot length of chain is attached, the pole on the other end, is raised as high as possible by hand, the chain is wrapped around a stake, down goes the pole and up comes the stake. Posted by Picasa

A very big fancy LEVER. It was more exciting to watch elephants do this task.

Sid Kellner caught up with the Carson & Barnes elephants pulling big top stakes and asked if I could do the same.
I agreed and had a large triangle built out of channel iron (6' at it's peak)with an iron rod inserted half way up so it could be carried. When the device was leaned backward a chain was wrapped around the stake (like a Georgia Buggy) but it was pulled upright by a harness elephant.
It worked OK but lasted about as long as Bill Clinton in the Army. It took two men to carry the thing and hook up the harness while a third wrapped the stake.
About half way around they decided it would be quicker and easier to knock them up by hand.

thanks for the clarification
I thought that is what we were talking about
I had the opportunity to use a couple of different types of these "Geogia Buggies" while working on the tents at the Circus Hall of Fame in Peru
not having ever seen it done ,I don't think I mastered it,or maybee it was just THAT HARD !
