When elephants were imported directly from Asia to the Animal Dealers, Zoos or Circuses they were invariably infested with a variety of parasites both internally and externally. Most of the internal parasites died right away from the change of soil they would consume while grazing. The most common parasites still today are "Round Worms" that are easily disposed of but many were lost from "Liver Flukes" much harder to detect. They all would have lice or I should say ticks, that usually congregated mostly behind the ears or in the arm pits and would spread among other elephants like a rumor.
I was at Circus World when Gee Gee called and said that her elephants were constantly scratching and had these little red bugs, no doubt acquired while co-mingling with other elephants while on tour. I invited her to bring them up to Circus World and we could take care of this in short order. In this picture the first elephant has come out of the truck and Gee Gee had her lie down on her side so we could start slopping on the neatsfoot oil from the container at right.

what were the names of those elephants
around 6 - 7 years old ?
Their names were "Gee Gee","Roxy" and "Schell".
hey buckles,
i had to giggle when i saw these pics - i can still remember the looks i got the first time i went out and bought gallons of mineral oil for the same purpose. when questioned, i told the folks at the store that i had a cantankerous old man that i was going to take care of, LOL. of course, i 'fessed up in the end, but what a laugh!
would that be the same roxy that is now with mr z's show?
I remember my FIL buying these huge containers of vaseline for the eyes. That always gave the old man an opportunity for a wink and a smart comment to the pharmacist or clerk. cc
A bigger laugh is buying two cases of Summers Eve Vinagar and Water. To bath pets with. Especially good for rescue working dogs when running water is not availabe at the desaster site. I also use it for pets who are terrified of a regular bath. Pour it on, work in, rub dry aith a towel
THERE you are! i was starting to worry ...
what a hoot! :)
