Besalou Elephants #2

Mac MacDonald presents his masterpiece.
"Mary", "Jean", "Millie", "Betty", "Kathy" and "Opal" named for Peggy and Mac's friends such as Millie Ward, Betty Bell, Kathy Goebel and Opal Page.

Not much dialogue required this morning, like all great acts, this one speaks for itself.

I think I could spot an elephant trained by Mr. MacDonald anywhere. Not a sloppy trick in any act. All the elephants look as happy as only an elephant can. The little one next to the curb looks like he is winning a race and loving it. I can see the influence he had on Mr Woodcock and his training. Your dad handed down this talent to you Buckles.

A little liberty horse influence there, methinks. I saw an act from Krone on TV once. The senior Mrs. Krone in evening gown (must have been 70 at least)presenting 8 elephants in a liberty act. Not another handler in sight and she directed the whole thing with a lunge whip. Quite impressive.

Looks good. The acts of the past definately have more craeativity to them then the acts of today

You can thank the animal wrong people for that.

I think you can thank the high cost of buying animals and then the high cost of staying home without any $ coming in while you put the act together. Plus, of course, a good dose of laziness on the part of many American performers who find that chrome and feathers are easier than practice.

Mac Macdonald, a perfectionist. I worked on Pollack show in the late 50's and also spent a lot of time chatting with Mac in his good ear. A facinating man in his 80's. What I admired about him most was, we would talk about new things one could learn about elephants / this is when Buckles Woodcock's name came to light. Mac said " If he could do things again in my life, watching Buckles around the Pollack herd was quite interesting and said he had learned a few things . I guess thats what made Mac Macdonald such a giant in my eyes. Not too many elephant men of recent stand quite that tall.P.S. to the one who saw Mrs. Krone work her elephants , I personnaly did not have that pleasure, but if she was anything like Mac Macdonald, WOW !

What a great looking group of elephants. Always heard that Mr. MacDonald was the best and from the photo's I've seen I will have to agree. Only wish I had the chance to see him in person and what him work.
