Wow,what a great picture,(like so many others here).
You sent me one of Gene Like this Buckles. I treasure it as a link to long, long, long ago. You know I am drowning my key board.
This is Bert with his lioness, Norma. They worked vaudeville with this act for many successful years. Mabel Stark introduced me to Bert when he visited us at Jungleland some half a dozen times. As Buckles says, he was a class act. Always looked, as they say, like he just walked out of the barber shop and just stepped out of the dry cleaners. A very elegant and gracious gentleman. He had retired from circus work to the real estate business around Fontana, California. I corresponded with Bert until his death in 1975. He sent me many autographed photos of his career and shared many memories of Mabel. I was very grateful when he showed up to visit me on Castle, at the Shrine Auditorium, in LA, in 1972.
If you want a little circus trivia, who can tell me Bert Nelson's full name...?
I think his actual first name was Carbert. Nelson's probably his middle name.
Have always heard good things about Bert Nelson, but not alot of info or photo's of the cats he worked with.
To Roger S. Bert Nelson was born Cardburt Nelson Snyder and began his career in 1925 on Al. G. Barnes Circus. In 1933 he doubled for Johnny Weismuller in the movie "TARZAN AND HIS MATE"
Bingo. Good answer. Many details like this become obscured over time.
