Early Cole Bros. Circus #2

How about this shot? All these cross cages and carriages packed on to this flat car and in bold letters "Clyde Beatty and Allen King". Wow!

Among one inherited collection of mine, are over 1,000 negatives of photos like this one. Equipment, performers, and lot scenes of Barnum & Bailey, Ringling before the combine, Cole, H-W, all the old titles, making an almost unbelieveable list. It would cost a fortune to have only one print made of each. Thankfully, Buckles has prints to post for us here.

Roger - there are nice scanners designed for negatives and slides - I do not recommend using flatbed scanners for negatives or slides - the results will be very poor.

This is an article about a scanner PrimeFilm 1800 and it uses USB and easy to use - I'm looking into getting one for Dad, he has quite a few boxes of 35mm slides and I'm afraid they will be lost if they don't get ported over to digital soon. Many are color and color over time the blue hues fade out - you can correct that with the pc but not to 100%

Here is a link to a nice review of that negative/slide scanner.

I just adore this picture. A true circus thing.

Thanks, Shannon. It goes to prove how bereft I remain of technical knowledge. This is certainly something I want to pursue. I also have around 100 rolls of 35mm negatives. None of these treasures should ever be lost. Thanks again.

No problem :)

This company also has another scanner for a little bit more if you really do have that many pictures - this one auto loads the pictures.

Shannon,
thanks for the scanner comments - we need to purchase one for Paul's slides as well as his negatives. Found this info - what do you think? It's a little more expensive but may create a larger photo.

Yes - that company has quite a few scanners designed for slides and negatives. Here is their complete lineup.

Pacific Image Electronics

The model PrimeFilm 1800AFL will do batch scans which is big for those who have a huge collection.

PrimeFilm 1800AFL

The 3600Pro models do scan at higher resolutions but your PC/MAC will have to have a 1394/Firewire conection and you better have plenty of HD space to store and RAM to edit those images. If your just archiving to post on the internet the 1800 will be perfect, but if your hardcore and want to digitally reproduce 8 x 10 prints then the 3600Pro model is the one for you.
