Adam Forepaugh & Sells Bros. Circus 1906

The most interesting thing about this picture is that the vast majority of the floor space is used to present the show. Chariot races around the track, the black shroud for statuary acts, the somersalting car and the structure at right for the "Fighting the Flames" production.
Today's arenas are just the opposite, designed to play ice hockey and that's about it.

wasn't that house used by clowns for one of their acts? I don't remember where I saw this years ago.

The clowns did have a "fire house gag" but this three storied structure was used to demonstrate how Fire Fighters could extinguish a flame. They had a horse drawn fire engine etc. pretty exciting.
This exhibition was commonly called "Fighting the flames" and I marvel at how they kept from burning the whole show down.
