From Linda Roberson

The Rosaire family and the Big Cat Habitat regrets to inform you of the passing
of great bear trainer Derrick Rosaire. Derrick leaves behind his wife Kay Pittenger,
and two sons. Funeral arrangements are pending. Donations in lieu of flowers can be
made to the Big Cat Habitat & Golf Coast Sanctuary. A Derrick Rosaire Memorial
will be planned for a later dater, as well. We thank everyone for their support
and understanding.

Derrick, see you down the road!

Palisades Park 1962

Scan12793, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

This is the only picture I have of our appearance in the Beatty Show
big top. Wish Paul Gutheil had been there.
That year Comack and Palisades conflicted so Oscar Crictiani and
us were brought in to finish out the Palisades date after the show's
elephants left for Comack.
This was the first of three times I did business with Frank McClosky.
For the most part, the date was in state of turmoil since it was only
months after the Wallenda accident in Detroit and Karl had signed
Palisades prior to that and now receiving offers from Ed Sullivan, he
was trying to be released.
To further complicate matters, a number of performances had been
added, exceeding what had been included in the contracts.
So Karl and Chet Juszyk and Oscar and me threatened a mutiny.
The manager Bill English arranged a meeting with Mr. McClosky
with the admonishment that he would only talk with one at a time
since he didn't intend to deal with a mob.
In short order he squared the beef and everyone was happy but
Karl who had to complete the date.

The other two meetings came quite a while later, I was offered a job to take over the herd when Rex was leaving to go to the Polack Show
then changed his mind and on a much later occasion when the show was playing Tampa, Barbara, me, Johnny and Mary Ruth were in the
seats watching the show when I got a tap on the shoulder and
Johnny Pugh told me that Mr. McClusky wanted to see me in the office.
I remember that Joe McMahon was with him and I was again offered
the job but I already had a full season booked.

Hi Buckles,

The smaller picture I sent you was Frank’s younger brother Walter.

Walter later managed the Beatty show and as very instrumental in bringing back Pugh after he no longer did his act.

Uncle Walt told me Pugh had a great pitch at move the people from the Blues to the Bandstand seats opposite the front grandstand, of course or an extra buck or two.

Thanks,

Ned

It seems to me that some animals labeled as cyclotis do not show the distinctive characteristics. I recall an animal at Columbus, OH zoo that was said to be an African forest but might get by for a bush elephant.

Note the contrast between these two - - -

There is no doubt about the above - -Bibi in Colombo. But look at this huge male - - -

That's Howard Bary wearing the pith helmet. This photo was taken when he was in the B. Congo in late 1946-early 1947. It was published in a booklet that he used with his British Africa Zoo. It was a traveling animal show that operated in 1951-53. It used three railroad cars with patrons walking through each of them. Bary had some nice animals in this show, including a pygmy hippo but no cyclotis.

The straight down tusks of this male are typical of cyclotis but the ears do not show the characteristic roundness. Perhaps a hybrid?

Walter handled Program sales Ringling, don’t know what years."

Only picture I have seen of him as a working hand, unfortunately it is too small and since Shannon has moved 10 miles away I'll have to wait a few days to get it enlarged.

Circus Model Builders #1

Scan12780, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

I have been invited to attend this afternoon's
Circus Model Builders Banquet at the Ringling
Museum to receive an Honorary Membership Award,
as my father had at Terrell Jacobs Farm in Bunker Hill,
Indiana almost 70 years ago.
My guest will be grand daughter Kathleen since we will
later attend a performance of the Sailor Circus, and the
off chance that she might see her confidantes and
associates Veronica and Bree.

The following pictures have been cropped from various
LCW covers.
The one above from a 1999 issue, was taken five years
earlier by Dick Townley at a 1994 gathering in the Meadowlands
when I was with the Ringling Show.
My haggard appearance confirms this.

Speaking of Carnivals, here are a few more pictures of
the Terrell Jacobs Circus on the back end of the Conklin
midway in 1942.
In the doorway you can see one of the three Dolly Jacobs
elephants that my father worked that year.
I think the tent was about an 80 with two middle pieces.
The elephants and lead stock were kept in the front round end
similar to the Ringling menagerie of the early 1950's
A ring set up between the first two center poles, the arena
permanently set up in the next area and the cats spotted in
the back round end.
Not much room for seats but I suppose with a grind show it
wouldn't make much difference.

Mac MacDonald trained these elephants for Bud Anderson
in 1939. They had been imported by the Cole Show in 1937
but for some reason had grown up in ignorance.
It was Mac's first job as a trainer so they more or less educated
each other.
My dad mentioned that the two elephants doing the cross mount
always locked trunks, as seen above.
Years later I asked Mac about that and he laughed saying, "Christ
I almost forgot about that. I don't know what I was thinking!"
