The 60-year old grew up in a village called Barma

in India's NorthEastern state of Assam which is

home to 5,000 of India's more than 27,000 elephants

He says he understands the "language" of elephants

He says that "most of the elephants here recognise me"

Dr Sarma was awarded Padma Shri one of India's highest

civilian honours for his work with elephants

According to his estimate he has treated more than 10,000

elephants this far in his career which isn't over yet

This big guy was 1 of India's oldest

living elephants in his upper 80s

I believe he died fairly recently
