Not according to several scientific studies Richard as they are their own subspecies as accepted by the zoological cataloging community I did some very careful checking
The Kermode Bear (Ursus Americanus Kermodei) also known as the "Spirit Bear" in Canada is a rare subspecies of the American Black Bear living in the Central and North Coast regions of British Columbia Canada The bear was named for Frank Kermode who was the former director of the Royal B.C. Museum who researched the subspecies
