Circus Performers as others

in the arts are treated much

better than the commoners

(along with the ruling folk)

We saw the North Korean "Cheerleaders" in recent times. These beautiful young people, mostly teen-aged women, vied desperately to get on the team, just to get out of horrid, oppressive conditions in North Korea, and get a brief look at the free world. Reports came that their escorts stared at them continually to demand the brightest smiles, but backstage also demanded unquestioned sexual moments, however unwanted. Thoughts of defection were quelled with threats of imprisonment and torture for both themselves and their families. All the cameras saw were the forced smiles.
