Read of the encouraging rebound of mountain gorilla populations in the April issue of SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE. And go back to Diane Fossey's 1983 book, GORILLAS IN THE MIST. Then, re-visit our lustrous Sigourney Weaver in her portrayal of Fossey in the 1988 film of the same title. In her book, Fossey lamented only 220 gorillas could be counted at the time. Current estimates by those still working her site in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda set the number at 1.063. The threats of deforestation and poaching continue, but severe penalties now imposed have proven slowly effective. Great reading.

PS: 2020 is SMITHSONIAN'S 50th anniversary year.
