My cousin and I, as pre-teens, fell for our first such feature at the State Fair of Texas, in the mid-'50s. I wasn't show-wise at the time, but I'd bet money that it was Ward Hall up there extolling the enticements. As boys of that age, we were, well, interested, and dug deep for that last quarter. After tempting build-ups and well-staged teasing, we trembled awaiting the promised flash. And of course, like the other rubes, we left without actually seeing a damn thing.
