Talked to dad about the ball. Anna May did the ball and according to dad, his father broke the trick saying "The trick was easy to train, hard part was finding a ball strong enough" Here is Babe working Anna May. Notice the ball is on a track.

He had told that story some years back
Old story has Wayne Sanguin cutting the pieces in the separate forms we see from steel plating. He then welded them into the ball in his Hugo shop.
