On the Castle show, we played dozens of small town hockey rinks, especially up and down British Columbia. Hubert also had calabanas to be hung all around, but not in his lexicon. The locals looked on in amusement when he urged his guys to "Hurry up and hang my hockey dashers."

I had the opportunity to operate
a frontlight (spotlight) for this
early spring 1964 engagement in the
"Old Garden" on 8th Avenue between
49th & 50th Streets not long before
I entered the Coast Guard
I watched in amazement as they
placed the red & white Calabana
on the hockey dashers & on the
fronts of all the upper seating
It turned that dingy old sports
arena into a magical place indeed
I felt right at home although
it would be more than a year
before I had my 1st projects
for "Big Bertha" directly
Very hard to believe that it
was more than 55 years ago
I was a 1st of May on Beatty
way back in 1961 in Commack
By 64 I could spell CIRCUS
both forwards & backwards
The central frames & outriggers
were initialy trimmed at 31 ft
Great story about the NY State
inspectors measuring from the
bottom as they wouldn't climb
If I recall correctly "TGSOE"
might have travelled that year
on it's smallest train set ever
of a mere 17 rail cars
That production however was as
strong & as exciting as any with
3 flying acts & plenty of elephants
Great clowns that never needed college
As mentioned before this Garden
was the 3rd with that title as the
1st & 2nd were at Madison Square
The 1 we call "The New Garden"
7th between 31st & 33rd Streets
is actually the 4th
