BARREL #12

Beatty works his barrel lion in Winterquarters, in Deming, New Mexico. He had this barrel for years, and by the time I was there, the poor thing had taken a beating. As you can see, it was not made of the stoutest materials. In Deming, there was a major supply of oil field cable spools that would have made a far better prop, but Beatty stayed with this one. In my day, the Prop guys never lifted it down off 51 Prop Wagon--they rolled it off and let it drop to the ground. Day after day, we had to beat it round again with sledge hammers, and I wondered when we'd finally break part of it beyond repair by showtime. When the last 7 of the Beatty cats came out to us at Jungleland, in '66, the barrel came with them, and Duke lion continued his trick. On our Big Stage Arena, we easily rolled it offstage, and it survived almost perfectly round. In mid-'67, the Beatty cats were sold off and scattered. I have no idea who got the barrel during our closing auction, in '69.
