This has to be the ball Wayne Sanguin "whomped up", as Colonel Woodcock liked to say. If we look closely, we see the prop was a work of genius. Sanguin cut these pieces from steel plating, in the "orange peel slice" patterns, and expertly welded them together for a perfect sphere. Oscar Cristiani either inherited this ball, or had one like it. Wherever it is now, I guarantee it's held together.

Construction was as you said
but it was aluminum not steel
I'd also bet that it held up
