Not an extra inch

Exactly. When we see the old loading lists, every car was known to the foot and inch, as was each wagon. A set line-up of wagons was assigned to a specific car, and as CHIC notes, not an inch of space was wasted, nor an extra inch needed.

A funny, sad story comes from the 1956 bankruptcy of the Beatty show. The end came in Burbank, and the judge allowed Beatty to take the show to Deming NM quarters--except they had unloaded and set up for shows that were not to be. Canvas Boss Joe Applegate was the only man who knew the loading order, and he had left in tears and gone home, down in Los Angeles. Someone on the show knew where he lived, and had to go get him to return and load the show so they could depart. By the time the show reorganized for the 2nd half of the season, Applegate had chosen to retire, but they had taken better notes and finished the season as a rail show.
