For most of the Beatty show's existence, the herd totaled nine elephants. Among the great names bossing them, from Beatty-Wallace, Beatty-Russell, Clyde Beatty Circus, and Beatty-Cole, were Col. William H. Woodcock, Sr., Mack MacDonald, Richard Shipley, Rex Williams, and Captain Fred C. Logan.
It was wryly noted over the years, that everyone who ever managed a circus eventually managed the Beatty show. We could say the same about elephant bosses around the Beatty herds.

Colonel Woodcock, Sr. said of being on the Beatty show, "You never had a better boss, and you never missed a payday."
