The day came when gear-head stakes became illegal in some jurisdictions. Hammers could slip off them too easily, as JIM notes, and veer straight into shins. Plus, the gear teeth often split under the hammers and sent shrapnel in dangerous directions.

Looks like the threads and wood draft key slot is gone from this Model T axle in the photo. Figure how many times these were driven into rock and it is a wonder somebody didn't get hurt when the shaft fractured. At least with the later axles I gave folks, the axle flange has a bit larger target to hit. But everyone would still ask for the old Model T axles. p.j.

CINDY - I used to drive Hoover's awning stakes right beside you and Ned, but don't look at me. Maybe it was 4-Eyed Tommy who slung the hammer. Or--wait a minute--we had LARRY ALLEN DEAN with us for a time, too. But it wasn't me.
