The escape sequence animals were from World Jungle Compound, later named Jungleland. This part of the wreck scene was shot at Paramount, and a number of Compound staffers went down. Mabel Stark managed the tigers, and some say they've seen a glimpse of her. I've seen that film countless times and haven't seen her yet. She is also listed in the "full cast and crew" roster on IMDb as an uncredited Spectator, and I don't find her in DeMille's audience shots. Hope, Crosby, and Mona Freeman, but no Mabel.
Compound personnel identifiable onscreen are Frank Phillips in a close-up, Chet Juszyk, wielding the 2 x 4 directing a lion, and a face-on shot of Pat Anthony when a girl frightened by the lion yells, "Don't let him in here!"
For another look at Pat Anthony in a DeMille picture, find him doubling Victor Mature as Samson, wrestling a Mel Koontz Jackie lion. The clip on YouTube as "Samson and lion" runs about 4 minutes. It is most unusual for a stunt double to be so clearly seen, yet Pat's face gets as many frames as Vic's.
The cage shown here was one of the classic "Cap Curtis" arched cages. Only a couple cages were used in the wreck scenes but after being tossed and turned and filmed from different angles, at least one was literally cut down the middle to show "more" cages in the wreck.
I never had an inventory of the wagons Louis Goebel brought in from shows that went bust on the West Coast. He rented them out to the studios, and it is likely some of those we see in GSOE. I used to prowl through the old wagons just before Goebel began donating them, and when he did, most of them were gone very quickly.
Meant to add: There is good footage of the old wagons at the Goebel Compound, in what we called the Big Barn. Go to YouTube, and type in the TV series ROUTE 66, Season 2/Episode 31, titled "Hell is Empty - All the Devils Are Here". We have a 16-minute clip, guest starring Peter Graves. There is the scene with Martin Milner and Eva Stern in the Big Barn, at 13:27, with excellent views of the wagons sitting side by side. Wagon guys may ID some of them by hitting the pause button. Having access to them as I did, I realized a moving sense of their history until the time came, as noted above, they were gone.
Bob, isn't there a list of wagons and the flat car id's that was sold to Paramont and shipped to Calif for the movie? I remember #20 (H-W) cage came from Goebels, but didn't some come from wq's? p.j.
You can still go to " youtube greatest show on earth train wreck ". Be careful not to get in the weeds in the comment section as almost all of it is wrong. pj

AFAIK there were no wooden cages on the show that year. The long blue performing cat cage shows up in the parade with a bunch of boards tied to it.

A number of the Goebel wagons found their way to Baraboo.
