DeMille wanted realism for Sebastian's fall, but didn't know how to shoot it. Art Concello said, "I'll show you how, but it'll cost you ten thousand dollars." DeMille paid. In the old practice top, in Sarasota, Concello had a pit dug the exact size of the flying act net, stretched the net over it, and masked the hole with reeds and shavings. The concept of the scene had Sebastian cutting the net down to further impress Holly. He was to "fly from zee beeg reegging tonight". Fay Alexander was to double Cornel Wilde in the fall, but Concello went up first to be sure the net was correctly set. For the act, the net was rigged at some 9 feet from the ground, but this time, it was at ground level--a much further drop. Concello swung out and hit the net. Out bounced his cigars and pocket change, but he pronounced it safe. Fay went up and got the shot, made up as Sebastian. At the supposed impact, of course, the shot was cut as if Sebastian had hit the deck, and the ensuing drama focused on his injuries. It was said that Concello shared a hefty cut of DeMille's payout with Alexander.
I had heard that Concello told DeMille it would cost him ten thousand dollars. So are you saying that Concello took that money and still took a hefty cut of DeMille's payout with Alexander? Maybe the whole deal was just the ten thousand dollars???? Regardless of what anyone thinks of Concello, the man knew how to wheel and deal when it came to money....

Holly laments, "I did this to him." Brad consoles her when Sebastian falls. Quite a story on filming that scene, likely told here many times over.
I wanna hear it!

No--as Fay told the story, Concello took DeMille's 10 G's, and shared part of it with him. Fay didn't say how much Art gave him.
Thanks Roger......
