My grand father took me to see this train on its first diesel run to Florida. Great purple beast! This was prior to the change over from air horns. Pop thought it was a cow in a near by pasture.
I took the FEC "Champion" to NYC from Florida as a child. Safety was not a concern.

ACL ran both an East Coast Champion
as well as a West Coast Champion that
started out of NY as 1 train set but
split up in Jacksonville to become 2

I rode the East Coast Champion many
times as a kid alone from the old
NY Penn Station to Hollywood Florida
to visit my Grandparents from age 8
until 11 or 12 when there were few
if any restrictions on such travel
That was in the early 50s
