Seems odd to bill any tiger as friendly- isn't part of the thrill that these are wild animals?

Right. But acts never got to write their own copy--nor even be consulted. They were encouraged to understand when they got "their own paper" they should be flattered and satisfied, and never ask for more money.

John Ringling brought Mabel over from the Barnes show in 1922.
