A true circus gentleman

Harry Hammond shown here

in the Beatty office wagon

I never heard an unkind

word by anyone about him

Also never saw him without

his infectious smile

I have a uniquely-designed Christmas card from Harry, listing proudly his "50 uninterrupted years" on circuses. The card features a US map, with circus winterquarters towns, the name of the shows, and the owners for whom he toiled. His sister, Lucetta, related he had been on 20 titles. He first joined out on Russell Bros., in 1934, in the Webb family's Cookhouse. From the time of that Golden Anniversary card, Harry continued on for a total of 61 years on the arrows.

Harry died 14 years ago, on March 29, 1995, in Brunswick, Georgia. He had been in the office on Beatty-Cole since 1978, taking over the top position on the retirement of another circus legend, Miss Edna Antes. A great memorial service for Harry was held under the Big Top, later that year, in Bradenton, Florida, on Sunday, October 19.

I have heard that Miss Edna Antes and Harry Hammond controlled the purse strings on Beatty as if they were the owners. What a compliment to them and only hope the owners realized what a gem they had in these two people.

They were both truly loyal

above all else to Frank &

then to Johnny as well

I know you use "Miss Antes"

as a sign of well deserved

respect Roger but indeed

she was Mrs William Antes

A most delightful lady

Edna was also the CIA

for Frank & absolutely

nothing escaped her

She would have made an

excellent spook as no

one would have thought

she might be an agent
