The one reminds me of our docile, highly reliable Portland, a mature Drom at Jungleland. When Camel Cigarettes decided to try a line of menthol smokes, in the mid-'60s, Portland was cast as their star. Mike Huber was her primary trainer, and I was privileged to accompany them to Filmfare Studios for commercials. Portland never spit on anyone, and would playfully nuzzle us until she knocked us over, then bite onto our jackets to help us up. For a scene in a boxing ring, we went down to Olympic Auditorium, where all the boxing movies were shot, and Portland was led up to the far top corner of the nosebleeds. There she patiently awaited her cue until Mike signalled her to clamber down the steep stairways to the ring, where a boxer took a Camel Menthol break between rounds. For this, Portland's single hump was adorned with studio snow, since the tobacco company insisted on using a drom for a camel. This ad campaign was abandoned during that era, and struggled with resurrection much later, but those studio paychecks were welcome whether our film work was aired or not.
