The "Alexander" was built in 1892-1893 by the Pullman Palace Car Company for A.A. McLeod who was the president of the Philadelphia & Reading RR. This photo was taken at the Pullman shops. There is a article that you can Google regarding the private cars of the 1890's and has many photos and drawings of this car. " Railroad Car Journal April 1897 " p.j.
The town of Pullman and some of the shops are still in existence in Chicago. Unfortunately, an arsonist destroyed most of the shops (such as the building in this photo) about 15 years ago. The exterior brick walls remain, and they are impressive.
Thanks, PJ. I could study these cars forever. Some years back, a friend was seriously into composing a major volume titled RAILROAD SLANG, the true language of those who lived the profession. His work was putting most circus glossaries in the shade, but I never knew if he published it.

Lettered "Alexander", but who for? Beautiful car.
Interesting method of shifting
the car under construction from
1 assembly area to another
