Harold used to mention her in his CIRCUS REPORT columns, but this is the 1st photo of her I've seen. Maybe this is where I do a "Now It Can Be Told" entry: It was known to the Hanneford and Clarke families that for years, Harold carried a major torch for Ernestine Clarke. Among his competitors was Robert Ringling. In fact, according to solid reporting from the family, Ernestine and Harold took off between shows one day to get married, and got all the way to the Justice of the Peace's office for their license, when they realized they didn't have time before the next show. They hurried back, worked the show, and upon further reflection, Ernestine tenderly retreated from the idea. When she married her returning WWII Captain Parley Baer, in 1946, Harold was a good sport and wished them well.
