Some here will recall the Tom Scaperlanda Collection, featured in an entire room of the Harry Hertzberg Circus Collection, late of San Antonio. Tom's photos were all framed in red, and there were literally 100s of them, most correctly identified. This one had one of those stamp-out label stickers across the bottom reading "John Ringling North". One of the degreed librarians there, Barbara Somebody, was with me when I pointed out that the man depicted there is Ben Davenport, owner of Dailey Bros. Circus, and not JRN. Barbara said, "Oh, yes, we have people come in here and tell us these things," and she turned and walked away with a dismissive wave of her hand. That's what we had at the Hertzberg when the place closed.
Alfredo Codona had gifted Senator Hertzberg with one of his fly bars. It was hung in the lobby of the Collection, with this same Barbara referring to it as "some kind of a swing".
Well, wouldn't you think that Barbara would see red flags that something was wrong..with people coming in here and telling us these things?? That is sickening alone and when you add in the comment "some kind of swing"....Heads should have rolled...My opinion of museums is not very high....
As a librarian myself, that type of comment is shameful to my profession. At the very least, a note should have been made that someone thought the photo was mis-identified.
