Beatty got a lot of mileage out of his offer to teach hopeful trainers. There is footage of this on YouTube. Most newcomers never returned after seeing the cats being fed. Horrified, seeing what those fangs and claws were for in tearing into the meat, they learned these animals are real. The girl here is Patricia English, who gave it a go, actually getting in with Beatty and a lion, but also gave it up early on. This "school" got a splash in LIFE Magazine, in 1941, about the time Beatty's 2nd book, JUNGLE PERFORMERS, was launched. His collaborator was the famed New York City gossip columnist, Earl Wilson.

In re the hardware, I wrote an article for Cheri Valentine's BACK YARD, detailing how I gaffed Beatty's chairs. Quite a procedure, that's for sure.
