My first boss at Jungleland was our Foreman, Robert Hayden, whom we all called "Doc". It was he who told me that if I wanted to learn the core wild animal profession, and be drawn into Mabel Stark's inner circle, to be immensely respectful of Charles Bennett, everyone's Uncle Ben. I owe Doc my successful time there for this advice. Doc told me of being in the Air Force in Europe, and of working for Sarrasani on every leave. He assisted on their generators, and was in his glory. Doc was also a master model builder, and was revered for his rendition of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus, a model fans drove long distances to see. Doc's wife at the time was known to be most uninviting, and despite his offers to show me his collection, because of her others warned me off. I never went to Doc's and to this day, I regret it.
