In this era, acts often advertised on their trucks. Pat Anthony proclaimed his "Jungle Monarchs" on his, until, as Bill Johnston sadly recalled, times changed, and such lettering became a liability. Circuses continued to sport elegant paint jobs, but it was no longer wise for animal acts to do so.

Elephant Shirley is still living at the animal park in Valdosta, Ga., having been in captivity for over 70 years, the record longevity for an elephant under human care.
