Taken on September 28th, 1969 at a Rudy Bros. Circus outdoor date in San Diego’s Balboa Park. (Today, some 49 years later, this lot is nicely landscaped.) In the background can be seen the Ford Building from the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition. (Today, it houses the Aerospace Museum.)
We get down to Balboa Park several times a year for the San Diego Orchid Society’s periodic sales. (Pat collects orchids.) We also have Zoo memberships and whenever out-of-town guests are staying with us, arrange to take them on one of the Zoo’s guided behind-the-scenes tours. (The tour of the Elephant Care Center is a particularly good one.) Don’t know if Vargas still plays there. (They used to set up next to the old Naval Hospital.)

by Eric Beheim ?
1 of these elephants is Shirley
She is living at Wild Adventure
in Valdosta Georgia at age 74
Perhaps the oldest known living
She was born in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)
in 1944 & brought to the US in 1946

Does the Quiroga version of Vargas
still play the Balboa Park date
I've enjoyed many great visits to
the park while working on shows
at The Old Globe & on a TV project
at the zoo with Pietro Canestrelli
