Chic --- The Old Garden at 49th/50th Streets on Eight Avenue was my favorite Garden. My parents took me there to see the circus when I was a very young kid. The arena floor was carpeted in Miles White pink sawdust. There were 3 big cages set up in the rings. There was wires, ropes, trapezes hanging everywhere -- suggestive of the wonders to come. Can you please do a photo essay of RBBB in the Old Garden? Thank you. -- ToddP
The pineapples were seen in the GSOE film, when during the "Lovely Luawanna Lady" number, the girls on the webs played "Aloha Oe" on the mini-xylophones. I bet they loved trying to play the damn thing while staying wrapped safely on their webs.
I saw Pinito Del Oro in this number, and even if Barbette (or somebody) had 32 or 40 girls up there, Pinito is the only image that went home with me.

Great idea Todd I'll gather some stuff
at a later date as I've got 10-11 days
of travels coming up & yes that Garden
was my favorite also (it was the 3rd)
The first 2 Gardens were actually at
Madison Square at about 23rd Street
The "New Garden" is the 4th
It opened in 68 between 31st
& 33rd Street between 7th &
8th Avenues above the Penn
Railroad Station which is
being extended West under
8th Avenue to have the old
Farley Post Office as the
new above ground edifice

They were tiny marching band
style of Glockenspiels Roger
I think they painted numbers
on the flat bars to follow
Shows what I know of musical instruments. Funny the girls played by numbers, since that's how I paint portraits.
