SHRINE DATES

The Shriners are out there in their midget autos. I don't want to count the dates I was on with these guys showing up drunk and running into ring curbs, guy lines, animal cages, and even performers and workingmen. I know of those defending the Shriners for providing work, and I know of those outraged at their behaviour in the back yard toward the showfolks, including making unwanted remarks, suggestions, and physical contacts that resulted in some memorable Hey Rubes.

And even though the Shriners do a lot of good work....Let's not forget the many years they flat out lied at the Shrine Circus dates about all the money raised going to the crippled children's hospital and burn unit....when in reality, the money goes for the upkeep of the Shrine Temples. Even the late Dear Abby did an expose' on this story....It is my understanding, that the Head Potenate (sp) finally put a stop to it. Once again, this is not to take away at all for the many good things the Shriners do....But why was it necessary to lie for so many years?

I have met some wonderful Shriner's over the year's totally dedicated to the good and belief of their cause. My son Adams God father, Bert Cronk was one of these dedicated Shriner's a co-circus chairman and a member of the great Felix Adler Tent. The folks I reference are indeed the minority in the circus branch of the Shrine. For the most part the Shrine, going back to the Polack and Dobrich and old Texas dates or the Shrine producer of your choice, has done more harm to the circus industry then peta or anyone else could hope too. Circus producer's who caved to their demands in an effort to "get their piece/cut," instead of having the nut's to independently promote and sell their show brought embarrassment to the industry and it continues today. Squeeze the last drop of blood out of the dead horse, before it fall's over. But, on the other hand, maybe we should thank the Shrine for keeping a number of phonies floating for a number of years......

CHARLES: Well stated. The Shriners who continue the crippled childrens' and burns hospitals are among the finest men you could know. They are devoted, responsible, and for the most part, sober. These are the ones who do not embarrass their temples. But these are not the Shriners I was talking about. I never saw it fail that talking to a single Shriner might have you with a decent, even interesting guy. But let a 2nd Shriner walk up and instantly you have two idiot-acting juveniles before you, either drunk or well on their way. Many are the stories of incidents when these ill-fated fools attempted to treat the circus women as a band of traveling whores. Indeed, Abby's expose revealed that the ongoing sympathy ploy of circus ticket sales was diverted to supporting local temple events, which were 99% drunken parties. A long-time 33rd Degree Mason friend told me of the ongoing efforts of the Masons to disassociate themselves from these kinds of Shriners.
