Good to see this confirmed. Shirley seems to have been born in 1944, captured in 1946, origin from Inda, and that the shipment of five elephants (one elephant died en route, due to the heat), imported by Harry Rimberg, arrived in Boson November 2, 1946 from India. This was Rimbergs first elephant import, and the very first import of elephants to US, since before the war. In Billboard 9 nov 1946, is mentioned that four of the elephants were purchased by Bob Stevens, Bailey Bros circus, the fith by animal trainer Will Hill, and that the high prize was a result of the record cost of $2 250 at the source, Ceylon, India?? Im not sure how this should be interpreted? Is "Ceylon" just a typo, or does it indicate the elephants were actually bought in Ceylon, but came to US through a stop in India? I understand from Bob Cline files, that the five elephants were Babe, Carrie, Christy, Shirley, & Mike.

Carin Cristiani & Shirley
It is my understanding that Shirley is still alive and residing at an Amusement Park in Valdosta, Ga......Possibly the oldest living Asian Elephant?
Yes indeed Charles at 74 she
is very likely to be the oldest
Asian of record & she remains
at Wild Adventures in Valdosta

Now known as Sri Lanka Ceylon is an
independant nation island that was
originally part of India but became
it's own country in 48 after "the war"
It would have been Ceylon India in
1946 when this sale occured
