This is from a set of promo photos of Jose Tomas. Most of the regular photos show his tie tucked into his shirt. I think the last time I got to see him was in the Astrohall when the show carried Greg II in the newer cage that had been built. p.j. holmes
An Equalizer!!!! Looks like an early electric cattle prod. Notice the heavy gloves with the long cuffs to help in keeping from getting any bite marks. p.j.
Just appalling, to think that something like this used to be condoned!! Regulation are indeed a necessary evil. Any one who think's different need only look at the Beatty show "Congo" exhibit, which was about a 20 year advancement in circus animal husbandry. Shameful.
I would think that the cattle prod was for show only. The group of photos this one shot is taken from show him on the floor with her ruff-housing with her. Had he had any fear of her, he would not have had the tie hanging out. You can go to Gargantuaphotos.com to see the entire set of photos taken that day. Again, promo photos...
Really? That is really what you are going to say, that it was for show only?? If it wasn't for all the democrat talking points flying around the air waves, I would have to sat that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. "For show only" sounds very much like the insane response of "I don't really use the whip, I just carry it for show," or "I don't use a bull hook like other people"(although it is one the floor, just outside the ring, and the elephants are fully aware of that fact) The only thing phonier is the person who trains and rides a horse with saddle and bridle, then 6 years later says it is bad, and takes the saddle and bridle off and does a "controlled in an arena" borne free riding demonstration. Right up there with that phoniness and fraud is training liberty horses with surcingle and check reins, and after they are properly "schooled" presenting the "free<" to show the love. John Milton Herriott it, because he understood what it really was.
I said " I would think that the cattle prod was for show only" I wasn't born when the group of photos was taken and would have no way of knowing what the Ringling staff was thinking when this group of photos was taken. If you care to look at the rest of the photos taken that day many years ago, you could observe Mr.Tomas. He doesn't appear to be in fear of his life. Again, as I said in the above post to google Gargantuaphotos.com to view the complete set.
Also will try to send Chic the Kelty photo of Gargantua in his cage before going into the big top in 1938 with four "armed" guards. This " I think " played off of the danger of the King Kong and Son of King Kong movies of 1933. Again, I wasn't around in 1938 and don't know the mind set of the advance staff of the Ringling show. But all the drama of fake armed guards and the phoney cattle prod sold tickets. Would the views of 80 years ago pass the PC police of today, not likely. I would like to explain Mr Wade that I am not an expert in the staging of gorilla photos in the 30's or 40's, and I have no way of reaching anyone for their personal opinion that did. I only gave my personal opinion.
Due respect, but to suggest it was for show only ridiculous. Why not carry a gun? The answer would then be, she was so valuable we did not want to kill her. The next question would be, "why have armed guard's in 1938. I am not a staging expert either, but I do know animals in the circus. A lot of bad things were done "back in the days," with all animal industries, not just the circus/ Because the circus has no association or governing board we were the last to admit, or address the issues. Like all professions not all were guilty, but enough were, that the industry should have addressed it before our livelihood was taken away from us. Even today there is a rush to defend "sacred cows," who were obviously not on the up and up. The good news, or bad news is that no one is listening to us any more. Pictures as a rule speak for themselves.

4pawfan,
That too is my opinion, after 40 years in a profession I love. I wish we hadn't been forced to change, but regardless, change we did.

Enough of all these "opinions"
Let's have some real "fake" facts
Or "alternate" facts that
seem more common today
From my 57½ years in the
businesses of both circus
& legitimate theater I
have heard most of them
Anyway you care to explain it
it is some nasty looking device
It looks more like some horror
movie prop
An alternative to pigeon toed
might easily be gorilla toed
