What year would this be? I've never seen trucks painted this way.

Weren't these first used in 1957 when the show went indoors?

JIM and PAUL: Right you are. I remember these units very well, brand new for 1957, and nobody on or off the show liked the idea. Losing the Big Top was bad enough, but going out as a truck show was over the line. Bert Pettus told me many other showfolk gloated happily that the mighty Ringling show had gone to rubber tires--since they had been scorned by RB personnel for being on truck shows.

Visiting them this year, I was privileged to meet a hero of mine, Fay Alexander. He had doubled Tony Curtis in TRAPEZE the previous year, and being the good guy he was, he took time to tell me about the filming. This was also my first time to get acquainted with Lou Jacobs, and to establish a 30-year friendship with my fellow Texan, Dr. J.Y. Henderson. I had virtually memorized Doc's book, CIRCUS DOCTOR, and he went back over many of his pioneer treatments with me. For '57, RB was noticeably reduced, but meeting these men overshadowed any other turn of history.

Let me echo Barbara`s comment with another Big "Thank You Chic"!! I have been a faithful follower of Buckles Blog for years and have always found it to be one of, if not the best source of circus information out there. Keep up the great work Chic and let me know if you need anything from me.
