Mabel is in Japan here, with the Nippon Traveling Menagerie, a tour that lasted 3 years, 1954-1957. She went there to teach the Japanese to train tigers, then to leave this act with them. Just after they arrived, in 1954, her husband, Eddie Trees, died on March 4th, of a heart attack after complications of abdominal surgery. Foreigners cannot be buried in Japan, so Eddie was cremated and Mabel scattered his ashes, as she told us, "Over the Pacific Ocean,to the four winds." Eddie was 67.

Ken Kawata, retired from the Staten Island Zoo, and a long-time reader here, was a cagehand for Mabel, during his off-campus time as a young college student.

Mabel had 2 tigresses named "Kitty". This wire-walker is one of them.
