Barnum & Bailey did indeed have 4 giraffes on the road in the early years of the 20th century. They also had good breeding success with them. RBBB also carried 4 in the early 1930s. The most ever on a circus was 10 with Barnum and London in 1882.
I never saw 4 at one time on any show. Most I ever saw was 3, the last time on RBBB in 1948.

My father told me of visiting the circus when he was a boy in the 1930s. His favorite part was the menagerie, especially on Cole Brothers.
One long-time Menagerie story has the Old Farmer at the circus, seeing his first giraffe, and declaring, "They AIN'T no such animal!"
