Interstingly carved front face covers the spokes I like the cotter pin
That cotter pin often broke, and was replaced with the main tools for keeping the wagons rolling--spit and bailing wire.
More commonly Roger it was a bent nail Cotter pins are intended to be a 1 use devise After being bent back they often broke Nowadays we have spring pins instead that can be used indefinitely (until lost)
No showbum ever lost spit and bailing wire.
