"The Jomar"

The rusted out hulk of this original

private car of John & Mabel Ringling

sits on a dead end rail spur behind

what was the Stottlemeyer Lumber Yard

The property belongs to Harvey Vengrof

who bought the joint & all the acreage

many years ago & is trying to develop

a tremendous low income housing project

Bob Horn has a couple of old cars there

he operates as a lunch joint & keeps

the Jomar behind them with a dedicated

group of volunteers that keep patching

bits & pieces to the carcass in hopes

(slim to none) of trying to restore it

These train cars sit there by the good

philanthropy of Mr Vengrof but are on

very borrowed time until construction

They will likely meet the same fate

as the three cars of Art Concello's

that sat on a dead end siding behind

a strip of commercial units he bought

to move the cars from the SRQ Airport

property where they been for years

Art had a primative shed roof built

to cover the cars from sun & weather

but at the end they were chopped up

for scrap sometime after his death

I have ony 1 poor photo of them

There were several group attempts

to have the "Jomar" restored in the

80's but all failed to raise the

amount of funds required & gave up

Due to it's deterioration the

Ringling Museum decided that

it was way too far gone so they

opted to buy the "Wisconsin"

which had been a temporary

car for the Ringlings until

the "Jomar" was completed by

Pullman for a new exhibit

At L is Father Elslander, pastor of St. Martha's Church, in Sarasota, who came out annually for the blessing of the departing circus train. The performance of this rite is included in DeMille's GSOE.

A long deceased circus fan friend had a lot of great experiences with circus people as a child. His father worked for one of the Railroads and was able to show favor to the circus people (Routing and etc) One of the shows gave him a pony as a child and later on a horse when he outgrew the pony. However, the real cream de la cream was that this friend and a cousin were offered a chance to ride the Jomar. The cousin who could have cared less about the circus was allowed to go on the trip....and my friend was not allowed to go as he had a big math test coming and was made to stay home and study (He was the one who truly loved the circus). One of life's cruelier moments. Rest well John Higgins
