One very succinct definition claims Kaye Washington invented this style of trapeze in the 1800s.
Burt Lancaster's Mike Ribble character was arguing for his "two-act" purity, in the film TRAPEZE, reminding Mr. Bouglione (Thomas Gomez) that "Leotard invented the trapeze on this circus a hundred years ago." This would be about right, since Leotard was there in the mid-1850s, and the movie was released in 1956. But I haven't found exactly when Kaye developed her name-sake trapeze.
