On this date, June 30, 1951, Clyde Beatty married Jane Lorraine Abel, at the Hotel Leopold, in Bellingham, Washington. Jane soon began designing and choreographing the production numbers, including the Beattyettes, as seen here. For this position, she got a screen credit for the Beatty film, RING OF FEAR (Wayne-Fellows/Warner Bros., 1954).
The Beattys were married 14 years, until his passing on July 19, 1965.
The powers that be decided to stop making royalty payments to Mrs. Jane Kuperstock for the Clyde Beatty title. She threaten court action and the matter was settled on the courthouse steps.
There was an obscure article stating Clyde Beatty, Jr., was born prematurely after Jane suffered a fall.
Jane and I remained in close connection until her death. She asked me for names of attorneys who could fight the show, moving her court action beyond a threat. I didn't want to return to the Beatty show as a cagehand, in 1980, but she asked me to, in order to be her eyes and ears on the lot, and in that capacity I served. With effort, the lengthy court ruling can be found on the internet, under headings including Jane Beatty Kuperstock vs. Jerry Collins, et al.
Jane Lorraine Abel was born on March 9, 1924, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There had been a divorce granted to her from a marriage in Massachusetts, in 1949. She was a singing comedienne, and during the winter of 1950, was starring at the Empire Room of the Washington-Youree Hotel, in Shreveport, when she met Clyde Beatty, who was quartering his circus there. His wife, Harriett, had died that season, on October 25th, at age 41. As noted above, Jane and Clyde were married from 1951 until Beatty's passing, in '65. She married Giovanni B. Perico on November 5, 1967, and divorced him in April, 1968. She married Saul J. Kuperstock on November 23, 1975. Mr. Kuperstock had been successful in the floor-covering industry, out of Pittsburgh. They remained married for 25 years, until her death on her 76th birthday, March 9, 2000. My birthday card to her had arrived at her Boca Raton home that day. Mr. Kuperstock interred her as Jane Beatty Kuperstock, next to Mr. Beatty, and with her mother and step-father, the Currans, in the Courts of Remembrance mausoleum, at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.
