In addition to his tie, he is also holding a Lockhart which I have found to be as valuable as spurs in the training/command reinforcement of higher level horse training. The skilled use of a Lockhart vastly eliminates the number of "assistants" required to maintain control of a herd of animals. Even used today(sans the hook) by drovers to maintain control over more then one or two animals.
